It is the ego that keeps us trapped. It is the ego that keeps us separated from our true self, and makes us believe that we are superior in some way to others.
We are no different to anyone else. We are all spiritual beings in physical bodies, having human experiences.
There are many who are aware of this, but there are also many who are not.
It is easy to look around and see the ego acting out in others, and in some cases it is out of control - but often we don't recognize it is happening with us.
This is where awareness comes in. When we are aware of our own weaknesses we can take stock, and choose to live in another way. Often we are blind to the fact that actions that temporarily satisfy us, can hurt other people, and in the long term may have detrimental results.
It does take some soul searching to find where we are placed regarding our ego - but when we do, it can be weighed up. And we can ask our self, " how will this action affect others, and will it really make me happy?"
I keep a note on my desk to remind myself - "Am I in my head or my heart?"
